Concerns Raised Over Abuse of Power in Faith Communities: Vulnerable Members at Risk
Abuse of power threatens vulnerable members and undermines trust in faith communities
Recently, our nonprofit organization received reports regarding alleged abuse of power within a local faith community. A member who raised concerns about a leader’s conduct reportedly faced exclusion, isolation, and subtle threats related to their immigration status. Additionally, an elderly leader with limited mobility was placed under undue control.
Faith communities are meant to be built on trust, with leaders serving through humility, compassion, and integrity. However, power imbalances can lead to:
Silencing of those who speak up
Retaliation against members raising concerns
Manipulation and exploitation of vulnerable individuals
Erosion of the community’s moral and ethical foundation
Our organization asserts that no one should face threats or control due to personal circumstances. Faith leaders must be held accountable, and communities need to establish safe spaces where concerns can be raised without fear of retaliation.
If you experience or witness such situations, we encourage you to:
Document incidents with dates, times, and communications
Report to independent authorities (e.g., IRS for nonprofit misuse, local law enforcement for harassment or threats)
Seek support from trusted friends, advocacy groups, or legal aid organizations
We are currently developing a confidential database to document cases of abuse, retaliation, and manipulation within faith communities. The goal is to identify systemic issues and advocate for stronger oversight and accountability.
If you have witnessed or experienced misconduct in a faith-based organization, please contact us confidentially.
